I just checked Blue Exorcist on Manga Plus today, not hoping for anything but what did I found? Kato-sensei is back!
She took almost a year off hiatus taking care of her health. In the first month I thought it won't take long, but it lasted for almost a year. Latest update that I read was July 1st, 2021. And a new chapter was released last month on May 2022. Newest chapter was today. I want to celebrate the comeback with a review on Blue Exorcist.
It took me a while to finally got engrossed with Blue Exorcist. I thought it was gonna be shonen as usual, you know, beating enemy who's gonna takeover the world in some sense, with the power of friendships and skills improvement.
I love how Blue Exorcist depict a different bond of brotherhood. Unlike the martyr-brother-complex Itachi or the wholesome trust tag-team of Elric brothers, the brothers here are angsty and complicated. Especially Yukio who's acting like an adult but actually a brat at heart, while Rin is the typical "getting stronger by facing one's feelings" who progressed from childish to a more mature personality.
