🎵 Santa tell me, if you're really there~ 🎵
It's that time of the year!
In December, back when I worked as cashier-waitress at Pothz, I used to troll the kitchen staffs by playing Last Christmas over and over again.
Joining the workforce
I got my new job as trainee auditor for forestry-based certifications program on March. After several experience in F&B, design, media, and IT sector, I never imagined I will be working extremely linear with my degree. And as someone who used to work from home individually, the first three months in 8-to-5 company was a real culture shock. I didn't know how fast my energy being drained, surrounded by a lot of people (my batch have 29 newcomers) for eight hours a day five days a week. Before I fully adapted to the situation, for about a month I got home at 5 PM, went straight to bed, woke up feeling sluggish around 8 PM.
Thankfully things got better. It's a good sign to see that every day I wake up refreshed and I am not dragging my feet to work. My workplace offer various testing, inspection, and certifications program. From food, health, cybersecurity, organization management, palm oil, forest, to carbon and greenhouse gases—we got you covered.
For all of you still on the jobhunting field, I wish you all good luck from the bottom of my heart. Eat healthy, get some exercise. It's a tight competition nowadays that could crush people's self confidence, it's important to keep your well-being in check.
The cost of terrible politics
Indonesia held three large elections this year: presidential, house representatives, and regional government. I am beyond exhausted by the dense and intense political chaos, I started regretting my digital newspaper subscription. Yes, it wards me off from hoaxes; yes, it keeps me on the loop; but every single headline is like a Dementor absorbing my soul: corruption, abusing authority, abusing law, money politics, yet another violence by police and military. It never ends and we never learn.
With a whopping 109 ministers and vice ministers, 580 representatives, clearer signs of weakening from Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK), and increase of taxes next year... eh, may the universe bless us all.
Expanding my humor
Despite the soul-crushing political atmosphere, this is a damn good year for laughs to me. I discovered a lot of stand-up comedians and sketch improv from YouTube. I need them more than ever.
- My absolute favorite observation comedy from Michael McIntyre. Clean, he makes fun of mundane everyday life. I cried laughing first time I watched his videos, and I still giggle every time I re-watched them.
- Roy Wood, Jr with his underrated white ally routine. The way I laughed was unsightly. How did he come up with this idea? And the delivery!
- Taylor Tomlinson and her dating life comedy deserve more hype. She has animated expressions and witty comebacks.
- Nerdy comedian who perform with PowerPoint, Don McMillan! So fun!
- I never knew letters reading could be hilarious. My favorites from Letters Live are the insurance letter and recommendation letter.
- The fluffy Gabriel Iglesias. I love his bits about performing in India and Saudi Arabia.
- Bill Engvall's routines about health and technology in aging life.
- All games especially Change, One Word, and Genre from the improv sketch quartet Shoot From the Hip.
- The chill, no-nonsense Sindhu Vee's routine on raising her biracial kids.
- The sweet Jeanne Robertson (RIP) and her bits about her loving left-brained husband. I binged all her videos.
On learning language
On reading
I have less time to enjoy reading for pleasure now that I have more reading to do for work. Of course every day before bedtime I managed to squeeze reading few chapters of manga, but there is barely any time for books. The 12 books goal this year staring at me, probably not mad, just disappointed 😶🌫️
BUT! I finally purchased one of my biggest wishlist of the year: a new bookshelf. One with transparent acrylic door so my babies are shielded from molds, critters, and dusts.
The glittery Giant Killing 61 and fullset of Neon Genesis Evangelion joining the collection. So happy!
I also started reading Apothecary Diaries which I think deserve the hype, Maomao takes her brain with her. And Daemons of the Shadow Realm, new gem dropped by Arakawa-sensei! Featuring fraternal twins, one is a hick, the other has brother complex. I expect to enjoy this for a long run like Fullmetal Alchemist.
It rains everyday after 2 PM since late November. I began to embrace myself as a cold-blooded woman who wears jacket (sometimes travel blanket) at the office with AC blasting on 18-20° C. No, I will not survive on winter in four-seasons country. I adapt better with dry and hot temperature (but not humid, I hate the sticky air).
All in all, I'll remain hopeful for next year. More comics to collect, more movies to watch, more books to read.
